Leon Engelen was born in 1943 in Bree (Belgium) an area surrounded by many beautiful little farms, and though creative, did not excel in painting. He did though absorb his environment and, as he matured, was able to revive these visions of his youth in his paintings. Leon attended a painting academy for several years, but left in 1968 as he disagreed with the current trends of splashing paint with paint-rollers. In 1974 he began painting on chalk canvas; a technique as old as the art of painting itself, but one which has dropped out of use during the last 100 years. Leon's starting-point is reality - linked to the work of landscape and animal painters of previous centuries. This is Leon's speciality, he paints what he thinks he ought to paint, in his own manner, and as well as he can do it. That it works is very clear, that it works so beautifully is truly wonderful.
